She loved Des.
Kit closed her eyes as the truth hit her with the force of a Texas tornado, stirring up a thousand thoughts and fears.
What was she going to do?
It was a beautiful, clear, cold day. The sun glinted off the pristine layer of snow that had fallen during the night, but the day’s beauty barely registered with her. Des filled her thoughts. And his silence pounded against her ears as he guided his truck along the icy track toward NW Section 158.
In fact, he had said very little since they had left the cabin, but he didn’t have to speak. As he had with her, she knew what was going on with him.
Earlier, before she had come fully awake, she had felt him enter her, and when the ultimate ecstasy had come, it had been even greater than what they had shared in the night.
Even amidst the passion, she had been aware that it was much more than sex for her. But unfortunately, with the same sure feeling, she had also known it had been nothing more than sex to Des.
Now, in the bright light of day, Des no doubt was worried.
For years he had successfully navigated the minefields she and her sisters had attempted to lay for him. Then, during one snow-filled night, his resistance had crumbled.
But it wasn’t his fault. Passion had flared in circumstances guaranteed to tempt even an angel, and he had given in to it. Now, though, he must be feeling monumental regret and wondering how he was going to back out of the trap he probably felt closing around him.
Besides the fact that it would be incredibly embarrassing to watch him try to gracefully maneuver back out of her life, she loved him too much to watch him try. She had to do something to help him. Later she would try to figure out how to help herself.
“You know, last night really meant nothing,” she said in an attempt to reassure him, then inwardly flinched. She had spoken without thinking through what she was going to say and had phrased it very badly.
“Is that right?”
There was a touch of sarcasm in his tone that alerted her to the fact that he wasn’t in the best of moods. She couldn’t blame him.
She knew that another woman might see the night they had spent together as license to start making demands on him, perhaps even to plan a future for the two of them. But he had nothing to fear from her. If nothing else, she was a realist. She understood all too well that what had happened was a one-time-only event, a night of ecstasy she would remember the rest of her life, but a night never to be repeated.
As for Des, he was a man, and men were experts at compartmentalizing their lives and forgetting things that were too inconvenient to remember.
“It’s just that I don’t want you to worry that I’ll read more into what happened last night than was really there.”
“And I’m supposed to thank you for that?” His eyes glinted with dark anger.
